SUMMARY:Us & Them Movie Screening
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nCDCD and The GAP Committee invites you to join us for a special screening of the documentary film Us and Them Thursday\, 12 September 2024 at Whitby Landmark Cinemas\, Whitby.\nAward-winning documentary filmmaker Krista Loughton’s “Us and Them” is a poignant documentary featuring compelling portraits of four remarkable individuals facing challenges of homelessness and addiction. The story traces Loughton’s decade-long exploration of the lives of Karen Montgrand\, Eddie Golko\, Dawnellda Gauthier\, and Stan Hunter\, individuals she attempts to support. Ultimately\, they end up supporting her. Visit Us & Them website \nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion focused on homelessness in Durham Region\, hosted by the Gap Committee.  Durham Region service providers and persons with lived experience of homelessness will share their experiences and the challenges of living as an unsheltered person. \nWe will also launch the community led website Homelessness in Durham Hope in Our Community. The website works to bring together residents\, local businesses\, and organizations to address and combat homelessness through collective effort and collaboration. The website will serve as a hub for resources\, volunteer opportunities\, and success stories\, highlighting the resilience and strength within our community. We believe that by working together\, we can create a more compassionate and inclusive Durham Region where everyone can thrive. \nAdmission is free\, but registration is required. \nWe look forward to seeing you there. \n

SUMMARY:CDCD’s 54th Annual General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:People Purpose Possibilities\nWith great enthusiasm\, Community Development Council Durham (CDCD) invites you to join us at our Annual General Meeting (AGM)\, themed “People\, Purpose and Possibilities.”\nWe are excited to announce some exciting features of this year’s event:\n\nKeynote Speaker: Lauren Brett is a Certified Professional Coach and is a member in good standing with the International Coach Federation. Lauren is a former high performance rhythmic gymnast\, representing Canada as both an athlete and as national team coach for many years. During that time the Canadian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation recognized her as Coach of the Year.\nAfter retiring from sport\, Lauren moved into the not-for-profit arts sector where for 18 years she managed operations at one of Canada’s premier training institutions for musical theatre performers. It was during this time that she discovered her love for leadership development and since 2012 has been on a mission to help bring more humanity to organizations through coaching and facilitating. She believes that coaching provides a sense of connection\, belonging and significance in a world that can sometimes seem isolating or overwhelming.\nLauren is passionate about supporting visionaries who want to have a bigger impact in their world by helping them to expand their authenticity\, resiliency and their capacity to achieve breakthrough performance.\nLauren is a mother of two incredible grown-up humans who are making their way in the world. When she’s not coaching\, you can find her volunteering or hanging out in a kayak on Georgian Bay\, hiking a trail\, skiing or dancing up a storm.Client Testimonials We are honoured by our clients who offered to share their personal testimonials\, shedding light on how they have benefitted from the dedicated efforts of our staff teams.Volunteer Recognition Awards This year\, we are thrilled to introduce volunteer recognition into our program. Honouring our amazing volunteers who have committed themselves to making a difference in our community with 5\, 10\, and more than 15 years of service.Staff Recognition Awards Recognizing the hard work and dedication of our amazing staff and their commitment to excellence and teamwork. \nCDCD Pop-Up Marketplace Returning this year to celebrate and showcase our remarkable Newcomer Women Entrepreneurs. \nTogether\, we can celebrate CDCD’s accomplishments\, discuss our vision for the future\, and explore how People with Purpose has enormous Possibilities.

SUMMARY:Albanian Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:From the Provincial Government’s website: Ontario is home to more than 28\,000 Albanian Canadians. Since the early 20th century\, the Albanian-Canadian community has made and continues to make significant contributions to the growth and prosperity of the Province of Ontario. \nNovember is a significant month for the Albanian community. Each year\, during the month of November\, people of Albanian origin celebrate the Albanian Declaration of Independence\, which declared Albania an independent sovereign nation on November 28th\, 1912. \nIn November\, Albania also commemorates Liberation Day\, which is the day that Albania was liberated from Nazi Germany forces after the Albanian resistance on November 29\, 1944. \nBy proclaiming the month of November as Albanian Heritage Month\, the Province of Ontario recognizes the meaningful contributions immigrants have made in building Ontario’s communities and the social\, economic\, political and cultural achievements of Albanian-Canadians throughout the province. Albanian Heritage Month is an opportunity to remember\, celebrate and educate future generations about Ontario’s rich history.

SUMMARY:Hindu Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:From the Provincial Government website: Ontario is home to a large and vibrant Hindu community. \nSince the first Hindu immigrants arrived in Canada at the beginning of the 20th century\, Hindu Canadians from across Ontario have made significant contributions across all fields: science\, education\, medicine\, law\, politics\, business\, culture and sports. Hindu Canadians have helped build Ontario into the multicultural success story that it is and have helped to build this province into the best place to live\, work and raise families. They continue to help foster growth\, prosperity and innovation throughout Ontario. \n“Deepawali” or “Diwali” is the biggest of all celebratory festivals that members of the Hindu community celebrate. It falls in either November or October each year\, depending on the cycle of the moon. It’s observed on the 15th day of Kartik\, the holiest month in the Hindu lunar calendar. Diwali commemorates the victory of good over evil. In addition\, during this time of the year\, Hindus also celebrate other significant festivals such as Navratri and Durga Puja. \nBy proclaiming the month of November as Hindu Heritage Month\, the Province of Ontario recognizes the important contributions that Hindu Canadians have made to Ontario’s social\, economic\, political and cultural fabric. Hindu Heritage Month is an opportunity to remember\, celebrate and educate future generations about Hindu Canadians and the important role that they have played and continue to play in communities across Ontario.
