SUMMARY:Hindu Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:From the Provincial Government website: Ontario is home to a large and vibrant Hindu community. \nSince the first Hindu immigrants arrived in Canada at the beginning of the 20th century\, Hindu Canadians from across Ontario have made significant contributions across all fields: science\, education\, medicine\, law\, politics\, business\, culture and sports. Hindu Canadians have helped build Ontario into the multicultural success story that it is and have helped to build this province into the best place to live\, work and raise families. They continue to help foster growth\, prosperity and innovation throughout Ontario. \n“Deepawali” or “Diwali” is the biggest of all celebratory festivals that members of the Hindu community celebrate. It falls in either November or October each year\, depending on the cycle of the moon. It’s observed on the 15th day of Kartik\, the holiest month in the Hindu lunar calendar. Diwali commemorates the victory of good over evil. In addition\, during this time of the year\, Hindus also celebrate other significant festivals such as Navratri and Durga Puja. \nBy proclaiming the month of November as Hindu Heritage Month\, the Province of Ontario recognizes the important contributions that Hindu Canadians have made to Ontario’s social\, economic\, political and cultural fabric. Hindu Heritage Month is an opportunity to remember\, celebrate and educate future generations about Hindu Canadians and the important role that they have played and continue to play in communities across Ontario.

SUMMARY:Veterans’ Week
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Veterans’ Week is an opportunity to reaffirm that\, as Canadians\, we each have a duty to reflect on and commemorate the sacrifices of all those who have served and continue to serve our country in times of war\, military conflict and peace. \n\nQuick facts \n\n\nEvery year\, in the lead up to Remembrance Day\, Canadians observe Veterans’ Week from November 5-11.\nThis year’s Veterans’ Week poster features two crew members of a RCAF CH-148 Cyclone helicopter looking down on HMCS Montréal. The Canadian warship and helicopter air detachment were serving in the Mediterranean Sea as part of Operation Reassurance.\nSince the end of the Korean War\, hundreds of thousands of Canadians have served in uniform.\nMore than 1.5 million Canadians and Newfoundlanders served in the great conflicts of the 20th century. Canadians can learn about their stories\, recognize their courageous efforts and honour their sacrifices by participating in Veterans’ Week activities across the country.\n\nTo learn more please visit these websites: \n\nRemembrance Day & Veterans’ Week – Veterans Affairs Canada\nLearning resources – Veterans Affairs Canada\nRemembrance (legion.ca)\nRegion of Durham Calendar

SUMMARY:National Transgender Day of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, we observe Transgender Day of Remembrance. Today\, vigils are taking place globally to commemorate those who have fallen victim to anti-trans violence and to emphasize the importance of ongoing efforts to support transgender communities in addressing this critical issue. \n\n\nTransgender individuals\, particularly transgender people of color\, endure some of the highest rates of violent crime\, with 70% of trans youth in Canada facing various forms of sexual harassment or violence. \n\n\nThe effects of this crisis on mental health are significant. Transgender and non-binary youth are over twice as likely to have considered self-harm in their lives compared to their cisgender counterparts (individuals whose gender identity aligns with the sex assigned to them at birth). \n\n\nThese alarming statistics\, along with the increasing prevalence of hateful rhetoric directed at 2SLGBTQI+ communities in Canada\, are completely unacceptable. \n\n\nWe encourage everyone to reflect on the significance of this day of mourning. Together\, we must combat the attitudes and behaviors that endanger the lives of transgender individuals. It is essential to put an end to the violence faced by trans communities. \n\n\nEveryone deserves to feel safe in their homes\, on our streets\, and within our communities.

DESCRIPTION:Housing is a basic human right and vital for health and mental well-being\, yet many individuals lack access to safe and affordable housing options.\nAddressing housing insecurity requires collaboration among governments\, non-profits\, and private sectors through initiatives like subsidies\, affordable housing\, and anti-discrimination policies.
